emily jane loves: fake eyelashes

if you're ever feeling down, ladies, try this: fake eyelashes. they're cheaper than going on a shopping spree  at anthropology and they won't give you love handles like those french fries from mcdonald's. i promise you, they're the instant pick-me-up.

here is my step-by-step guide to how fake eyelashes can transform your look (and your life):

1. pick up a pair of fake eyelashes. they sell them at sephora, ulta and the high end department make-up counters, but i prefer to buy mine at cvs. typically, i buy the brand ardell, but this time i decided to try katy perry's new line of fake eye lashes*.

2. wash your face clean of all eye make-up except for any base you may use. (and here is the sacrifice i'm making for this blog: posting a picture of myself without make-up on the internet)

3. apply the glue onto the fake eyelashes along the lash line.

4. make sure the entire lash line is white with the glue.

5. apply the fake eyelash to your natural lash line. make sure it's as close to the natural lash line as possible or the eyelashes will fall off and you will look like a fool. it should look something like this:

6. apply your eye make-up as usual, making sure you apply a thicker coat of eye liner to cover up any white glue that's showing. note: just because you are wearing fake eyelashes does not mean you can skip mascara. the mascara acts as another layer of glue to help the eyelashes stay put.

7.  BOOM! you have fake eyelashes, and for two seconds you might, just might, feel like kim kardashian. notice how my left eye is smizing and my right eye is not? that, my friends, is just another built-in perk of fake eyelashes.

*note: i was not impressed by katy perry's line. the lashes were great and seemed more natural looking than ardell, but the glue was horrible. if you buy her line, make sure you buy the glue separate.

emily jane loves: asymmetrical hemlines

i think asymmetrical hemlines are really fun. i don't see this trend lasting forever, so i decided to buy a dress with an asymmetrical hemline while they're still popular. the asymmetrical hemline isn't for everyone, however, because the front of dress is so short. it's a bizarre feeling to know that your behind is completely covered, but your front is exposed. with a simple gust of wind you could be showing everyone more than you bargained for (trust me, i found this out the hard way).

warning: be prepared to show a lot of leg.

have fun with the asymmetrical hemline dress and match it with different patterns or colors like i did.

emily jane loves: vertical striped pants

for the past couple of weeks, my friends have been talking non-stop about vertical striped pants. i liked them right away, but it wasn't until yesterday that i decided i had to have them. the only problem is where does one buy vertical striped pants? i'm having a hard time finding them, so your suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

here are a few reasons why i'm so obsessed:

and you know this trend is hot if whitney port and willow smith are rocking them:

emily jane loves: burnt orange

i've always been a fan of wearing orange, especially burnt orange.  it can be difficult to wear, however, after you dye your hair red. my solution? wear burnt orange on your bottom half instead of your top, so it doesn't match your hair and turn you into an oompa loompa.

if you don't have red or orange hair, you can have more fun with burnt orange:

you can also play around with the burnt orange look by adding a collar:

or wear burnt orange pants:

the moral of the story is never ever let your hair color dictate what you can and cannot wear.

emily jane loves to hate: velvet

i had mixed feelings when i saw that velvet was in this season. my immediate reaction was sheer terror because my mind immediately went to this:

the dreaded crushed velvet leotard. this leotard instills fear in any woman who grew up participating in gymnastics.

once the flashbacks subsided, i learned how to appreciate velvet, that is when it's being worn outside of a gym. my first velvet purchase was this cute shirt from forever 21:

things that are great about this shirt:

1. the pattern is the only part about this shirt that is velvet aka no velvet overload.
2. you can wear this shirt with jeans to go out or put a blazer on top of it and wear it to work.
3. the color is an amazing shade of dark navy that almost looks black in some lighting.

here are some other ways you can wear velvet:

and my personal favorite, the velvet pantsuit:

emily jane loves: hats

growing up, i was always told that i was a "hat person." so, naturally, since one person thought i looked good in hats, i took that compliment and ran with it.

lately, i've been experimenting with the elusive fedora hat. for a while, i thought fedora's were reserved strictly for justin timberlake, but that was before i saw this post by emily over at cupcakes and cashmere.

she was able to make a sometimes ridiculous hat look sexy and chic. here is my look inspired by emily's post:

i think i look more like indiana jones than a sexy blogger, but i'm okay with that.

here are some other ways you can wear the fedora:

if fedoras aren't your cup of tea, you can try these hats instead:
